History

Personal History Serenitys great grandfather served in the early years of Starfleet translating languages before the age of universal translators. He was a lively old man and doted over Serenity in her younger years, encouraging her sharp mind. They were inseparable and she soaked up his stories of history, and exploring. He told her stories in dozens of languages, even changing languages mid story to make her keep up. It motivated Serenity to keep learning. Later she would realize she had a keen mind for language structure, and that even at a young age she knew several languages, and was picking up on them at a fast rate. G’pup as she called her great grandfather was elated when she asked him in ernest to teach her.

Rather than teach her languages he taught her how to learn languages and the history behind why the languages developed as they did. Over the years they developed a game to challenge each other by telling stories randomly changing languages with each line. To most of their family they were oddities speaking mostly gibberish.

Her aptitude for language presented her with many opportunities to travel as she entered her teen years. She out translated professionals often, but was humble enough to learn from them, lest the doors to explore closed to her.

She was selecting a career path and further education when G’pup died. Their bond had been so deep she refused to leave his side in the last three weeks of his life while his body and his mind waned. Before losing his mind he had encouraged her to seek more opportunities to explore. He had loved his days in starfleet and the new places and experiences he had. They both knew she didn't want to join starfleet, but working with them as a civilian would help.

After he passed away Serenity poured herself in to study trying to make her gift useful in a universe that had a computer that would learn language faster than she could. She found that she could not escape the connection of history of culture and the ties of language. This lent her to be a history and language major at Oxford University on Earth.

The University was still rich with history and had expanded its historical studies to other worlds as well. Every year she would hop a ride on a Federation ship to visit new worlds for a couple of months and immerse herself in their history. She forced herself to find parts of planets with no universal translators. It was a worthy challenge, she absorbed culture and language so fast she was quickly making a name for herself before even graduating.

Upon graduation The Federation offered her a job observing some primitive cultures, they were struggling with language and understanding the developing race. Serenity took the job before she could blink, she felt she was honoring G’pup, exploring in a more modern, and yet similar way he had.

Over the next few years she applied for and took assignments mixing with new race observations and archaeological sites. Learning how these races developed with so few modern resources was fascinating.

She was 26 when she met Admiral Terrence Mitchell. She had been extracted from an observation that fell apart, and he had been on the rescue ship having ridden along to investigate the tjr failure.

To say she was drawn to the 50 year old Admiral was an understatement. He was sharp, keen, and did not look his age. When she met him he'd been off duty and aside from the attractive Salt and pepper hair she would have thought him barely 40. It was weeks before she realized his position as they kept running into each other off duty.

Seeing him in uniform one day she realized his rank, she researched him a bit and was devastated to find that not only was he nearly twice her age but also married with three kids. She worked hard to erase her crush on the man, and left the ship at the next port. He had not done anything wrong but she wasn't stupid, he was struggling with his attraction as much as she was, and neither of them trusted themselves.

It would be two more years of random research jobs before she would run into Terrence again. This time she had been invited by her Federation boss to a diplomatic symposium about exploring some abandoned worlds tucked inside the Tasoli nebula. The Federation was proposing exploration and the race, the Tas, who owned the nebula were hesitant.

He approached her during the event, and after some catching she found he was in the middle of a divorce and one thing led to another, their magnetism was stronger than ever. Over the next two years both of their interests aligned with trying to convince the Tas to allow the research, causing them to spend a great deal of time together.

Their relationship blossomed as did the Federations relationship with the Tas. It took over a year but when they received the clearance for research the stipulation was that Admiral Mitchell run it. He ensured that Serenity was on the team, and soon after they married. Their professional lives were flourishing, however their marriage caused strain between Terry and his children who were blaming Serenity for their parents split, and were not happy about their new stepmother being so close to their age.

The project in the Tasoli nebula lasted four years, Serenity became quite vital to the project as the world she was assigned to had of sites and dozens of records of languages which hardly related, each one was new. Why the civilizations disappeared, they weren’t very sure.

The Tas decided they were done with the federation presence in their system, however they wanted things to end well and set up a new diplomatic event. It would be the highlight of Terrys career, the ending of a years long diplomatic project and research event. It was perfect timing as Serenity fell pregnant, and they would be able to enjoy a few quiet years, building their family and giving Terry the chance to reconnect with his older children on Earth, his youngest son begrudgingly took the chance to observe his father's last mission.

As the ship, The USS Phoenix, was looking for the perfect spot to host the event it disappeared with all hands considering missing.
